Three Days of JDM in Tokyo: A Realistic Itinerary (2026)
Mega Web and Honda Welcome Plaza Aoyama have both closed, and the famous bay spots cannot be reached on foot. A three-day Tokyo plan built around what is actually open in 2026.
Short answer: Three days is enough to see real Japanese car culture in Tokyo, but only if you plan around one fact — the famous spots are on expressways, and you cannot reach them without being in a vehicle. Everything else in this guide is train-accessible. The car parts of your trip are the parts that need booking.
The other thing worth knowing before you start: two of the destinations English travel articles still recommend to car fans in Tokyo have closed. Details below, because a wasted afternoon in Odaiba or Aoyama is a wasted sixth of your trip.
JDMX lists 128 experiences. This itinerary is built around which of them fit which day, and what you can do for free in between.
Before you plan anything: the licence question
This decides the shape of your three days.
To drive in Japan you need an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, in paper booklet form. A 1968 Vienna Convention IDP is not valid here, and card or smartphone versions are refused. If you are from Belgium, France, Germany, Monaco, Switzerland or Taiwan — countries that do not issue the 1949 format — you drive instead on your home licence plus an official Japanese translation.
If you have none of those, you are not stuck. You are just a passenger, which for most of this itinerary is the better seat anyway: 118 of the 128 experiences on JDMX require no licence at all.
What the licence actually gates:
| Without a Japanese-valid licence | With one | |
|---|---|---|
| Daikoku PA, Umihotaru, Tatsumi PA | Only as a passenger on a booked tour | Self-drive possible |
| Touge roads (Gunma, Hakone) | Only as a passenger | Self-drive possible |
| Drift taxi, ride-along tours | Fine | Fine |
| Showrooms, arcades, parts shops | Fine | Fine |
Day 1 — Central Tokyo, on foot and by train
Day one costs almost nothing and needs no booking. Save your money and your jet lag for the nights.
Nissan Crossing, Ginza
A brand showroom on the Ginza crossing, open 10:00–20:00 daily, with irregular closing days. It is directly connected to Ginza Station (exits A3, A4, A5). Nissan does not publish an admission price for it — it is a showroom, not a ticketed museum.
What is on display rotates. Through autumn 2026 the site has listed the new ELGRAND and KICKS, and a Fairlady Z exhibit from late August. Check before you make a special trip for a specific car.
The arcades — and the version that is actually running
This is where a lot of visitors go wrong by a generation.
Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune. The version you will find in arcades in 2026 is Maximum Tune 6RR PLUS, which replaced 6RR on 17 April 2024. A new title, Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune Ignition, was announced in February 2025 and was still running invitation-only location tests as recently as July 2026 — at the time of writing it had not reached general release. If a guide tells you to look for "6RR," it is one version out of date.
Initial D THE ARCADE is alive and actively maintained: SEGA rolled out Version 3.3 nationwide on 9 April 2026, adding a wet-weather Irohazaka course.
Venues in Akihabara and Shibuya that carry them include GiGO Akihabara Building 3, Taito Station Akihabara, Taito Station Shibuya and GiGO Shibuya Miyamasuzaka. Cabinet counts change constantly — both games have official location finders, and those are the only reliable source on a given week.
Parts shops
Autobacs and Up Garage both have branches across Tokyo and both publish official store locators. Up Garage deals in used parts and is the more interesting browse. Opening hours vary by branch enough that it is worth checking the specific store page rather than trusting a blog.
Night one — the Wangan
This is the booking that defines the trip. 109 of the JDMX listings go to Daikoku PA, 38 run the Wangan, and 52 of the 128 include hotel pickup.
Book night one rather than night three. If it gets closed on you — and it does get closed, see below — you still have two evenings left to try again.
Day 2 — Yokohama, and the thing you came for
Nissan Global Headquarters Gallery, Yokohama
Seven minutes on foot from the east exit of Yokohama Station, or five minutes from Shin-Takashima on the Minato Mirai Line.
Hours are split: the gallery and boutique run 10:00–18:00 on weekdays and 10:00–20:00 on weekends and holidays; the café is 10:00–20:00 every day. Closing days are irregular and announced only on the gallery's own top page, so check it the morning you go. As with Ginza, Nissan publishes no admission price.
If you only have time for one Nissan site, the Yokohama gallery is the bigger one and it is the one with the heritage cars.
The afternoon or evening: pick one experience
Day two is the day to spend money. Three shapes, depending on what you want:
- Drift. 33 drift experiences are listed. A drift taxi needs no licence and no skill, which makes it the single most accessible spectacular thing on this list. Note that the Ebisu Circuit drift taxi runs April to November only and Ebisu is in Fukushima — that is a full day, not an afternoon, so it belongs on day two or three and not squeezed anywhere.
- A car-meet or night drive. 67 car meet experiences, most of them running the bay at night.
- Self-drive. 11 of the 128 listings put you behind the wheel; 119 are ride-along. The self-drive ones are where the 1949 IDP matters.
Filter by departure city before you get attached to a listing — a Gunma departure is not a Tokyo evening.
Day 3 — Out of the city
Three realistic options. All of them are a full day.
Touge. 2 touge experiences by type, 4 by location, and 2 of the listings depart from Gunma rather than Tokyo. The Initial D passes — Haruna, Akagi, Myogi, Usui — are all in Gunma, and Gunma Prefecture publishes its own official pilgrimage guide to them. Haruna, Akagi and Myogi are on separate mountains; doing all three is a driving day with very little standing around.
Umihotaru. 25 listings go there. It is a parking area on an artificial island in the middle of Tokyo Bay, on the Aqua-Line, and it is open 24 hours with free parking — but there is no train station. The only public transit is a limited Aqua-Line highway bus between JR Kawasaki and JR Kisarazu. For practical purposes it is a driving destination.
Fuji or Hakone. Both are reachable by train or highway bus without a car, but the point of going is the road, and the road needs a driver. Treat this as a booked drive, not a day trip you improvise.
The closures nobody has updated their article for
This section is the reason this guide exists.
Toyota Mega Web — closed since 31 December 2021
Mega Web in Odaiba was the default recommendation in every "Tokyo for car fans" article for twenty years: free test-drive courses, the History Garage classic collection, the Toyota City Showcase. Toyota's own page states plainly that it closed on 31 December 2021 after more than 22 years.
The Palette Town complex it sat inside was demolished. On the same Aomi site, TOYOTA ARENA TOKYO opened on 3 October 2025 — a roughly 10,000-seat multipurpose arena and the home court of the Alvark Tokyo basketball team. It is a sports venue. There are no public car exhibits in it.
If an itinerary sends you to Odaiba to drive a Toyota on an indoor course, that itinerary is describing something that stopped existing nearly five years ago.
Honda Welcome Plaza Aoyama — closed since 31 March 2025
The free Honda showroom on the ground floor of the Aoyama building, open since 1985, closed on 31 March 2025. Honda is demolishing the building; operations in it ended by May 2025 and the replacement building is targeted for fiscal 2030.
I could not find any official Honda announcement of a replacement public showroom in central Tokyo. Plan as though there isn't one.
Tatsumi No.1 PA — not the photo spot it used to be
Tatsumi appears in a lot of older writing as a free night spot with a skyline view. What actually happened:
- January–February 2020: blind screens installed to block the skyline angle, and speed bumps added to stop acceleration runs
- January 2021: night closures began at Tatsumi No.1 and neighbouring Hakozaki PA
- January 2023: a speed hump was installed at the exit, still in place and still working a year later
It also has only 29 standard parking spaces. I could not find a 2026-dated official source confirming the exact current closure hours, so treat it as subject to night closure rather than planning around a published schedule.
Daikoku PA — open, but closed more often than you think
Daikoku has never been permanently closed and is operating normally. But weekend night closures of roughly 20:00 to 03:00 are current policy, not history — driven by noise, illegal gatherings and long-stay parking. Reporting from October 2025 specifically flags foreign tourists being stranded there after a closure, having arrived by taxi or on foot.
Which brings up the thing that gets people arrested. Shuto Expressway parking areas cannot be entered on foot from ordinary roads. There is no pedestrian entrance, no bus stop, no taxi rank. Do not let anyone drop you off, and do not climb anything.
There is no official service that tells you whether Daikoku is open tonight. Operators who run the route every week know before you do, and a good one has somewhere else to go — Umihotaru, or the Wangan itself.
If you are coming in January: Tokyo Auto Salon
Tokyo Auto Salon 2027 runs 15–17 January 2027 at Makuhari Messe, across exhibition halls 1–11 plus the conference hall, event hall and outdoor areas. Tickets are sold through the official site; prices had not been published at the time of writing. Elementary-school children enter free with a guardian, and middle-school age and up need a ticket.
It is the single biggest concentration of tuned Japanese cars anywhere in the world, and it is thirty minutes from central Tokyo. If your dates are flexible at all, move them.
Putting it together
| Morning | Afternoon | Evening | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Nissan Crossing, Ginza | Akihabara arcades, parts shops | Booked: Daikoku / Wangan night run |
| Day 2 | Nissan Global HQ Gallery, Yokohama | Booked: drift, circuit or self-drive | Spare — retry the bay if night 1 was closed |
| Day 3 | Booked: touge, Umihotaru or Fuji/Hakone — full day |
The pattern: keep the free, train-accessible things in daylight in the city, and book the things that need a vehicle. That is not a preference, it is the geography.

FAQ
Can I visit Daikoku PA without a car?
No. Shuto Expressway parking areas cannot be entered on foot from ordinary roads — there is no pedestrian entrance, no bus stop and no taxi rank, and entering on foot carries fines and imprisonment. You need to be in a vehicle already on the expressway, which in practice means a booked tour or self-driving with a valid licence.
Is Toyota Mega Web still open?
No. Mega Web closed on 31 December 2021 after more than 22 years. The Palette Town site in Aomi now hosts TOYOTA ARENA TOKYO, a roughly 10,000-seat sports arena that opened on 3 October 2025 and has no public car exhibits.
Is Honda Welcome Plaza Aoyama still open?
No. It closed on 31 March 2025 because Honda is demolishing and rebuilding the Aoyama building, with the new building targeted for fiscal 2030. No official replacement showroom in central Tokyo has been announced.
What car museums or showrooms in Tokyo are still open?
Nissan Crossing in Ginza (10:00–20:00 daily, irregular closing days) and the Nissan Global Headquarters Gallery in Yokohama (weekdays 10:00–18:00, weekends and holidays 10:00–20:00, irregular closing days). With Mega Web and Welcome Plaza Aoyama both gone, those are the two manufacturer spaces left in the Tokyo–Yokohama area.
Which Wangan Midnight arcade game is currently running?
Maximum Tune 6RR PLUS, which replaced 6RR on 17 April 2024. A new title, Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune Ignition, was announced in February 2025 and was still in location testing as of July 2026.
Is Initial D THE ARCADE still playable?
Yes. SEGA rolled out Version 3.3 nationwide on 9 April 2026, which added a wet Irohazaka course among other content.
Do I need a driving licence for a three-day JDM trip in Tokyo?
Only if you want to drive. Japan accepts 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permits in paper booklet form; a 1968 Vienna Convention permit is not valid. Visitors from Belgium, France, Germany, Monaco, Switzerland and Taiwan use their home licence plus an official Japanese translation instead. 118 of the 128 experiences on JDMX need no licence at all.
When is Tokyo Auto Salon 2027?
15–17 January 2027 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. Tickets are sold through the official site; prices had not been published at the time of writing.
Can I get to Umihotaru without a car?
Barely. There is no train station. The only public transit is a limited Aqua-Line highway bus service between JR Kawasaki and JR Kisarazu. For practical purposes it is a driving destination, which is why 25 of the JDMX listings include it.
Is three days enough?
For Tokyo, yes — one city day, one experience day, one day out. What three days does not allow is Tokyo plus a Fukushima drift day plus a Gunma touge day. Pick one out-of-town commitment and do it properly.
