JDM Experiences in Japan by the Numbers: Types, Licences and Departure Cities (2026)
How many bookable JDM experiences JDMX lists in Japan, what kinds, how many need a driving licence and where they depart from. Counted live from the database.
Short answer: JDMX lists 128 bookable JDM car experiences in Japan. 118 of them need no driving licence, 119 are ride-along, and 11 put you behind the wheel. 122 depart from Tokyo, and 109 include Daikoku PA.
These are counts, not estimates. Every figure on this page is calculated from the JDMX listings database each time the page loads, so the numbers move as tours are added or withdrawn.
What is being counted
One listing is one experience that a visitor can book through GetYourGuide. JDMX classifies each one by hand: the type of experience, whether you drive or ride along, whether a driving licence is required, the departure city, the spots it visits and the car.
Listings that are no longer bookable, or that turned out not to be JDM experiences, are excluded. An experience that offers both driving and riding counts in both columns, so some totals add up to more than 128.
This is the JDMX catalogue, not a census of every operator in Japan. Experiences that are sold only direct, or only in Japanese, are not in it.
Experiences by type
| Type | Experiences | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Car meet tour | 67 | You are driven to a meet spot, most often Daikoku PA |
| Drift | 33 | Drift taxi rides and drift lessons |
| JDM ride | 20 | A passenger ride in a JDM car, usually on the expressway |
| Touge | 2 | Mountain-pass drives |
| Rental | 1 | Self-drive hire of a JDM car |
| Circuit | 1 | Track driving |
| Garage | 1 | Workshop and tuner visits |
| Anime | 1 | Initial D and similar pilgrimage tours |
| Other | 2 | Experiences that fit none of the above |
What each type involves is covered in the types of JDM experience.
Drive or ride
| Experiences | |
|---|---|
| Ride along | 119 |
| Drive yourself | 11 |
| No driving licence required | 118 |
The split has a legal cause. To drive in Japan a visitor needs an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, or, for a handful of countries, a home licence with an official Japanese translation. Many visitors arrive with neither. The details are in the driving permit guide.
So most of the market is built around the passenger seat. If you cannot drive here, you are not locked out of much.
Experiences by departure city
| Departure | Experiences |
|---|---|
| Tokyo | 122 |
| Yokohama | 0 |
| Osaka | 4 |
| Kyoto | 0 |
| Nagoya | 0 |
| Gunma | 2 |
Departure city is where the experience starts, not where it goes. A Tokyo departure routinely ends up in Yokohama, because that is where Daikoku PA is.
Experiences by spot
| Spot | Experiences that include it |
|---|---|
| Daikoku PA | 109 |
| Wangan (Bayshore Route) | 38 |
| Umihotaru | 25 |
| Touge roads | 4 |
| Ebisu Circuit | 1 |
| Fuji Speedway | 0 |
One experience can visit several spots, so these do not add up to the total.
Daikoku PA cannot be reached on foot or by public transport, which is a large part of why so many tours exist to take people there. See the Daikoku PA guide and its history.
Options
| Option | Experiences |
|---|---|
| Hotel pickup included | 52 |
| Runs at night | 104 |
| Private (your group only) | 34 |
What the numbers showed on 3 October 2026
The figures above are live. This section is a snapshot, written on the date in the heading, so the reasoning stays honest if the counts drift.
It is a passenger market. 119 of 128 experiences were ride-along and 11 let you drive. 118 needed no licence at all.
It is a Tokyo market. 122 of 128 departed from Tokyo. Osaka had 4 and Gunma 2.
Daikoku PA is the product. 109 of 128 experiences included it. Car meet tours were the largest type at 67, ahead of drift at 33 and JDM rides at 20.
Self-drive is rare. Touge drives, rentals and circuit driving together made up a handful of listings. If driving a JDM car yourself is the goal, the choice is narrow and the licence rules decide most of it.
